A tragic incident unfolded at Protea Hotel by Marriott Naguru Skyz when Shukla Chiragkumar, a 35-year-old Indian national, fell from the fourth floor and died en route to Mulago Hospital.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of June 3rd, with the deceased having checked in the previous evening.

In a statement, the hotel management reported that Chiragkumar, an overnight guest, attempted to take his own life by jumping from a fourth-floor suite. The hotel staff responded immediately, rushing him to UMC Bukoto and informing the police. Despite efforts to save him, Chiragkumar was pronounced dead while being transported to Mulago Hospital.

The hotel expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to Chiragkumar’s family and friends.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the individual who tragically passed away. We choose to respect the family’s privacy at this time and will not release further details. We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate event and are fully cooperating with authorities. Our priority remains the safety and well-being of all our guests and staff members.”

The hotel also emphasized the importance of mental health awareness, urging anyone struggling with mental health issues to seek help from licensed professionals or contact Mental Health Uganda at 0800 212 121.

“Although this was a situation that was out of our control, we stress that if you or anyone you know of, is battling with mental health issues/troubles, please seek help by visiting a licensed professional or contact Mental Health Uganda at 0800 212 121. Your life truly matters,” read a statement by the hotel.

What does Police Say?

Preliminary police investigations revealed that Chiragkumar had checked into room 14:02 with an unidentified woman who spent the night with him.

“The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, including whether he jumped voluntarily, was pushed, or if the woman’s actions or words influenced his decision. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information related to the incident.

This incident marks the second suicide in Kampala within three days. On Friday, John Birungi Babirukamu, a seasoned digital marketing specialist and General Manager at Hedge Marketing, took his own life by jumping from Tagore Living apartments. Babirukamu left a series of goodbye messages to his family before his death, expressing his apologies and love.

Family members attempted to reach Babirukamu after receiving his distressing messages, but his phone was switched off. He was pronounced dead by first responders shortly after his fall.
