Police Boss Jailed 25 Years Over UGX50 Million Theft

The court in Kabale has sentenced a 40-year-old police detective to 25 years in prison for aggravated robbery.

On Friday, Kabale High Court Judge Samuel Emokor delivered the sentence to Sergeant Herbert Ahisibwe, also known as Kyabona, after the prosecution, led by Julie Najjunju, successfully proved the charges against him.

The court heard that on the night of November 26, 2020, Ahisibwe and unidentified accomplices robbed Provia Kadusabe of Shs50 million at Muhabura View Guest House in Bunagana Town Council, Kisoro District. During the robbery, Ahisibwe and his co-conspirators used a sedative to incapacitate Kadusabe, causing her serious harm.

The prosecution called for a severe sentence, highlighting that Ahisibwe’s actions were particularly egregious given his role as a police officer. Ahisibwe, a resident of Huumya Village in Bukwanga Sub-county, Bundibugyo District, had served in the police force for 14 years.

In his defence, Ahisibwe’s lawyers requested leniency, noting his role as a father of six children who rely on him for support.

However, Justice Emokor underscored the severity of Ahisibwe’s betrayal of his duties, stating, “The actions of the convict cannot be taken lightly. It is deeply troubling that a trained and skilled police detective, sworn to protect life and property and prevent crime, would use his expertise to commit such a serious offense. Such individuals must be removed from the police force to maintain its integrity.”

Considering all the factors, Justice Emokor sentenced Ahisibwe to 25 years in prison, with time served on remand (three years, seven months, and ten days) deducted from the sentence, resulting in a total of 21 years, four months, and 21 days. Additionally, the court ordered Ahisibwe to pay Shs50 million in compensation to the victim. The convict was informed of his right to appeal the decision.
