An intelligence-led operation by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has resulted in the recovery of firearms from two individuals in Parombo Town Council, Nebbi District, on December 5, 2024.
According to West Nile Regional Police spokesperson Collins Asea, the operation was carried out by UPDF personnel from Paidha’s 57th Battalion at Yusuf Guest House in Parombo Town Council.
Asea confirmed that during the operation, a rifle with registration number 58044841 and four rounds of ammunition were recovered from the home of one of the suspects, identified as Asuman Agwoko.
“On December 5, 2024, at approximately 8:00 PM, UPDF personnel from the 57th Battalion in Paidha conducted a successful operation at Yusuf Guest House in Parombo Town Council. During the operation, a firearm, a rifle with registration number 58044841, and four rounds of ammunition were recovered from suspect Mr. Asuman Agwoko in Room 5 of the guest house,” Asea said in a statement.
Asea further explained that the rifle was allegedly obtained from the wife of a UPDF officer currently deployed on a peacekeeping mission in Somalia. The officer’s wife is said to have mortgaged the firearm with the understanding that it would be retrieved by the officer’s brother.
A case of illegal possession of a firearm has been registered under reference number NEBBI CRB/496/2024.
Asea confirmed that the suspects will face a court-martial, with investigations into the matter ongoing.
“The UPDF has indicated its intent to subject the suspects to a court-martial process. Investigations are still underway, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” Asea added.
