Uganda is facing a worsening Mpox outbreak, with 262 confirmed cases reported across 28 districts. Kampala leads the count with 102 cases, followed by Wakiso (38) and Mukono (10).

Dr. Richard Walyomo, Mpox Incident Commander for the Kampala Metropolitan area, highlighted the virus’s impact on urban and densely populated communities. Particularly affected groups include commercial sex workers, timber workers, university students near Makerere University, and food vendors. “People with compromised immunity are especially vulnerable to this virus, making it essential for everyone to contribute to the containment efforts,” Dr. Walyomo said.

Within Kampala, Kawempe Division has the highest case count at 61, followed by Makindye (13), Nakawa (11), Central (9), and Rubaga (8). To manage the situation, the Ministry of Health, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), has established an isolation and treatment center in Entebbe.

Efforts are focused on reducing transmission in high-risk groups. Authorities urge the public to maintain hygiene, limit close contact with unfamiliar people, and avoid sharing personal items. Health officials stress the importance of avoiding sexual contact with strangers to prevent infection.

Dr. Walyomo emphasizes vigilance, noting that Mpox symptoms—such as rashes, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and back pain—resemble other illnesses, making lab tests crucial for diagnosis. Approximately 70 patients remain hospitalized, with contact tracing and awareness campaigns ongoing.

The Ministry of Health and WHO are working to boost awareness at the community level, ensuring strong surveillance and prompt case management. “Our surveillance network is strong, ensuring that every case and contact is closely followed,” Dr. Walyomo added.

Officials continue to urge adherence to preventive measures to curb the outbreak.
