Kabale, UG: In a shocking case heard at the High Court in Kabale, 25-year-old Denis Arinaitwe, a tailor, has been sentenced to 70 years in prison for the gruesome double murder of his two lovers—a female police officer and a university student.

Presiding over the court, Kabale resident Judge Justice Samuel Emokor heard from the prosecution that Arinaitwe committed the heinous crimes at Rwamukundi village, Kirigime ward, Southern division of Kabale Municipality, and Kabale Central Police Station.

The prosecution presented evidence that Arinaitwe was responsible for the murders of Sarah Naturinda, a second-year student at Kabale University, whose body was discovered in her rented room in Rwamukundi village. Naturinda’s body was found with a piece of cloth tied around her neck, hands, and mouth.

Following this, Arinaitwe proceeded to Kabale Central Police Station where he fatally shot Constable Caroline Owomugisha, a police officer attached to the Field Force Unit (FFU), amid domestic disputes.

After the double murders, Arinaitwe attempted suicide by using the gun he had taken from Constable Naturinda. He was subsequently rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

Arinaitwe, appearing frail, pleaded guilty to all charges before Justice Emokor through his lawyers, expressing remorse for his actions leading to the deaths of his two lovers.

High Court Judge Samuel Emokor condemned Arinaitwe’s actions as barbaric and savage, emphasizing the sanctity of life and the brutality of his crimes. Arinaitwe was sentenced to 70 years in prison, with each count of murder carrying a 35-year sentence.
