Tragedy struck along the Mbarara-Lyantonde road as a fatal road accident claimed two lives and left two others injured.
The incident, which occurred at Akyapa, involved two vehicles: a silver Toyota Spacio with registration number UBC 554D, and a white Tata lorry bearing registration number UBH 961W.
According to SP Samson Kasasira, the PRO Rwizi, the driver of the Toyota Spacio, whose identity remains unknown, was travelling from Mbarara towards Kampala when the accident happened.
Allegedly, the driver lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speeding, veered from his lane, and collided with the oncoming Tata lorry.
Tragically, two occupants of the Tata lorry lost their lives in the collision, while two others sustained critical injuries. The injured individuals were promptly transported to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention, thanks to the assistance of compassionate bystanders.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were transferred to Kasambya mortuary in Lyantonde District for postmortem examinations.
Efforts to identify both the deceased and injured victims are currently underway. The vehicles involved in the accident have been towed and are presently stationed at Sanga Police Station, awaiting inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to road safety regulations.
