Uganda has embarked on a comprehensive exploration mission in Buhweju District, signaling a significant leap in the nation’s energy development endeavors.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development’s Nuclear Energy Department has commenced a noteworthy awareness campaign in Buhweju, marking the initiation of an extensive uranium exploration venture across the country.

Engaging with political and civic leaders at the Buhweju District headquarters on Monday, November 27, the ministry’s technical team shed light on the broader scope of Uganda’s nuclear energy initiative.

Emmanuel Wamala, acting assistant commissioner for nuclear fuel, highlighted Uganda’s abundant energy resources, citing uranium as a pivotal component in the nation’s prospective energy portfolio. “Our objective extends beyond current energy demands; it’s about securing sustainable energy for future generations,” emphasized Wamala.

The exploration endeavors in Buhweju form part of a comprehensive national strategy encompassing various energy sources, including hydropower, biomass, solar, and uranium.

“To realize our Vision 2040 and achieve the targeted 52,481 MW capacity, integrating 24,000 MW of nuclear energy is pivotal,” stressed Wamala.

Godfrey Tumwebaze, Buhweju’s Deputy Resident District Commissioner, underscored the project’s significance amidst Uganda’s economic and population growth. “Diversifying and expanding our energy infrastructure is crucial, and nuclear power offers a stable and clean energy source vital for our industrialization drive,” noted Tumwebaze.

The extensive national uranium exploration spans multiple districts, identifying potential deposits not only in Buhweju but also in regions like Arua, Pakwach, Adjumani, Masindi, Mbarara, Hoima, Kitgum, Kabarole, and Sembabule.

“These explorations signify a move towards self-sufficiency in energy resources, forming a crucial element of our national energy strategy,” added Tumwebaze.

In response to community safety concerns, Tumwebaze assured residents about the project’s safety protocols and shared benefits. “Our approach isn’t just about extracting resources but also ensuring the local communities benefit from the project,” he reassured.

Highlighting the pivotal role of nuclear energy in Uganda’s developmental aspirations, Tumwebaze emphasized the criticality of domestic uranium exploration.

“With an annual requirement of 4,000 tons of uranium for our proposed nuclear capacity, exploring our domestic uranium resources is paramount,” he stressed.
