William W. Popp Appointed New U.S. Ambassador To Uganda

The U.S. Mission in Uganda has officially announced the selection of William W. Popp as the incoming U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, succeeding Natalie E. Brown in this crucial diplomatic role.

William W. Popp is a distinguished career member of the Senior Foreign Service, holding the esteemed rank of Minister-Counselor. His nomination as Ambassador to Uganda received Senate confirmation on July 27, 2023.

Popp brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to this position, having previously served as Ambassador to Guatemala from 2020 to 2023. Prior to this role, he held the position of Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Mission in Brazil. During his tenure in Brazil, he also served as Chargé d’Affaires a.i. from 2018 to 2020. His diplomatic career has seen him in various key roles, including as Political Counselor and Acting Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Kenya from 2015 to 2017.

Furthermore, Popp has contributed significantly to U.S. diplomatic efforts as the Director of the Office of Regional Economic Policy and Summit Coordination in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the State Department, particularly during the 2015 Summit of the Americas.

His educational background includes a Master of Sciences degree in National Security Strategy, earned at the National War College in Washington, D.C. during the years 2012 to 2013. William W. Popp’s overseas assignments have taken him to pivotal posts at the U.S. Embassy in countries such as Colombia, Angola, and Nicaragua.

Popp holds a Bachelor’s degree from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, and a master’s degree from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. His proficiency in both Spanish and Portuguese enhances his ability to engage in diplomatic dialogue, and he has garnered numerous State Department awards throughout his illustrious career.

In his capacity as the new U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, William W. Popp is poised to assume a pivotal role in nurturing and strengthening diplomatic relations between the United States and Uganda during his tenure.
