Police in Soroti City are currently investigating a disturbing incident where an individual with special needs was allegedly subjected to sexual assault by a 20-year-old man named Opolot. The distressing event reportedly took place at Soroti City’s sports ground during a fete organized by the MK Movement, around midnight on August 16, 2023.

SP Ageca Oscar Gregg, the East Kyoga police spokesperson, provided initial details of the incident. He explained that in the early hours of Wednesday at approximately 12:30 am, the suspect was discovered engaging in non-consensual sexual activity with a 49-year-old adult male who had physical disabilities.

Both individuals were apprehended and taken into custody, with the incident being reported at the Soroti Central Police Station. A case involving an unnatural offense has been officially opened.

Furthermore, Ageca stated that the police have obtained a statement from the accused party and have spoken to the victim, who underwent a medical examination by qualified doctors. The police spokesperson shared these updates in a statement issued on August 16.

Ageca, while addressing the incident, also condemned same-sex relations and referenced the country’s recently enacted anti-gay legislation. Uganda’s Anti Homosexuality Act criminalizes same-sex activities and can result in severe penalties. Ageca emphasized that engaging in public indecency, such as public sexual activity or nudity, is also subject to legal consequences.

In a related context, President Museveni reaffirmed his commitment to uphold the anti-homosexuality act, which was signed into law on May 29. Despite international appeals for the legislation’s repeal, Museveni stated his intention to maintain the law, solidifying Uganda’s position against same-sex relations.

The investigation into this disturbing incident continues, with authorities striving to ensure justice is served and offenders are held accountable in accordance with the law.
