Police in Busoga North Region are investigating circumstances under which an 18-year-old male suspect died shortly after securing a police bond from Kasambira police station in Kamuli district.

Hakim Mwesigwa,18, a resident of Kireka Village, Nakawa Division in Kampala was handed over to the police station on Monday, July 3, after he was arrested by residents on charges of burglary and theft which he allegedly committed last year in November.

Preliminary information indicates that Hakim Mwesigwa,18, a resident of Kireka Village, Nakawa Division in Kampala was arrested by residents on July 3, 2023, at about 3 pm and handed to Kasambira police station on charges of burglary and theft which he allegedly committed in November last year.

However, on Wednesday, July 05, Mwesigwa was given a police bond after complaining of ulcers but unfortunately, he died upon reaching the clinic where he had been rushed for medication.

“He (Mwesigwa) was arrested and detained until July 5 when he was given a police bond after complaining of ulcers. One of his relatives identified as Racheal Nabirye stood surety for him, before proceeding with him to Hope Clinic in Kasambira Town Council, where he died,” Busoga North regional police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha said on Wednesday evening.

ASP Kasadha added that detectives have already started investigating the circumstances under which the suspect died.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was taken to Kamuli general hospital mortuary for postmortem as the scene of crime officers documented the police station.

The development comes barely a week after Greater Bushenyi Police on Monday said they are investigating how a suspect accused of breaking into people’s houses and shops in Rubirizi District died shortly after being arrested and detained in police cells.
