The Maska High Court presided over by Justice Lawrence Tweyanze has today granted bail to jailed MPs Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya alias Mr Update who have been behind bars since 2021.

The duo are accused of murdering, several people in the famous bijambiya in greater Masaka region. The two NUP members of parliament representing Makindye West and Kawempe North have since denied the charges which opposition largely their party says they’re politically trumped up charges.

They were granted bail by the same court in September 2021 only to be re-arrested on new charges and several bail applications have been declined.

However, the state attorney Richard Birivumbuka this time round withdrew objection to their bail application saying the DPP directed him not to object but simply make their submissions on bail terms.

Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana have been represented today by Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Counsel Medard Lubega Ssegona, Leader of opposition Mathias Mpuuga.

While in a one on one interview with US based journalist Bahati Remmy while on his trip to the United States, president Museveni vowed that Ssewanyana and Ssegirinya will never be granted bail until they’re tried as he has always said. It’s now not clear whether they won’t be re-arrested.

The legislators will pay Shs20 million in cash each and their sureties are told to pay Shs50 million each non cash. They will also further deposit their passports with court and report monthly to the International Crimes Division of High Court.
