Uganda Police authorities have intervened to thwart a planned rally by National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, in Kamuli.

According to Mike Kasadha, the spokesperson for the Busoga North Police region, ten individuals were arrested for their roles in organizing an illegal demonstration and inciting violence.

Kasadha revealed that credible intelligence had flagged plans for a mobilization tour by NUP members in Kamuli municipality on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

However, when the event commenced, a faction attempted to stage unauthorized demonstrations, prompting law enforcement to step in and detain the suspects to restore order.

Citing past incidents, Kasadha noted that NUP’s mobilization activities had previously been suspended due to non-compliance with set guidelines, leading to public disorder, traffic disruptions, business interruptions, property damage, and incidents of dangerous driving causing harm.

He elaborated that despite the suspension, NUP leadership persisted in mobilizing and leading processions toward Kamuli. However, law enforcement intercepted them at the border of Kamuli and Jinja district, dispersing the crowd and compelling their retreat.

Kasadha reiterated that the suspension of NUP’s mobilization activities would remain in effect until the leadership adheres to police guidelines. He praised members of the public who advocated for peace and non-violent behaviour during the incident.

During the dispersal, police resorted to teargas and fired live bullets into the air to disperse the crowds. Kyagulanyi, in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), expressed discontent with the police’s actions, citing injuries and arrests among NUP supporters. Nonetheless, he lauded the resilience of his supporters and affirmed their determination to continue their political activities.

Despite the setback in Kamuli, NUP had previously announced plans for a nationwide tour, set to kick off in Kamuli.

However, uncertainty looms over their next destination in Bugweri district on Thursday, as it remains unclear whether the police will authorize their activities there.
