Uganda Police Traffic Directorate Spokesperson SP Kananura Michael says during the period (24-26 Dec), they registered several road crashes where 33 people lost their lives and 156 sustained serious injuries.
According to Kananura, among the fatalities registered, pedestrians & riders constituted 85% most of these being upcountry. He adds that highways were peaceful.
”We registered one major road crash during this season in Kapachorwa, a single fatal crash which occurred on 26th 12 2023 at 04:00 pm at Towei Corner Kapsindi along Kapchorwa – Mbale Road,” says Kananura adding;” The accident involving Motor vehicle reg. No UBD 074J Prado Land Cruiser. It claimed the lives of 05 people; including four children and their mother. Four other people, including the driver.”
Kananura further states that during this season, they registered fewer road crashes compared to last season because of the interventions that started much earlier.
What Are Common Causes Of Accidents?
- Speeding and exceeding prescribed speed limits
- Careless overtaking maneuvers
- Overtaking on blind corners and hills
- Attempting overtaking manoeuvres when faced with multiple vehicles ahead
- Distracted driving, such as using mobile phones or messaging while operating a vehicle
- Road obstruction caused by broken-down vehicles
Uganda Police Traffic Directorate Spokesperson SP Kananura Michael says to promote road safety, all road users must adhere to the following guidelines:
- Adhere to speed limits on all roads
- Exercise caution and patience when overtaking other vehicles
- Place rectangular reflectors both in front and behind broken-down vehicles to alert other road users
- Report broken-down vehicles to the nearest police station for proper traffic control and removal
- Remain vigilant and report any road obstructions, including broken-down vehicles, to the toll-free line 0800199099.
