Bukedea, Uganda — Preparations are underway at Bukedea Teaching Hospital for a three-day Free Eye Health Camp organized by the Ruparelia Foundation, set to take place from March 27 to 29, 2026.
The initiative, in partnership with Mulago National Referral Hospital and C-Care, aims to provide much-needed eye care services to communities across Eastern and Northern Uganda.
The outreach, organised in honour of businessman Rajiv Ruparelia, will offer free eye check-ups, cataract screenings, prescription glasses, and cataract surgeries for selected patients.
Health officials expect to screen over 2,000 patients and perform hundreds of surgeries, targeting preventable eye conditions that continue to affect many Ugandans.
The camp is open to both adults and children, with residents from Bukedea, Soroti, Mbale, Gulu, Lira, Tororo, and Kapchorwa encouraged to participate. Organizers are calling on local leaders to mobilize community members who may be experiencing vision problems.
Prof. Lawrence Muganga, speaking at last week’s official launch, said Victoria University will support the initiative by deploying 80 nursing, midwifery, and pharmacy students to assist medical teams during the camp.
He highlighted the potential impact of the outreach, particularly for children whose education and future opportunities can be transformed through improved eyesight.
“Through initiatives like this eye camp, the Ruparelia family is giving people a second chance in life,” Prof. Muganga said. He added that vision is fundamental to education, work, and overall development, making access to eye care crucial for underserved communities.
With corporate partners and medical teams backing the initiative, the Ruparelia Foundation’s eye camp is expected to restore sight and improve the quality of life for thousands across the Teso Sub-Region.
