Israeli Military Confirms Release of First Hostages by Hamas Under Ceasefire Agreement

Jerusalem, Israel — The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the release of the first group of hostages held by Hamas, marking a major development in the recently brokered ceasefire between the two sides.

According to the IDF, seven hostages were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) before being transferred to Israel through the Re’im crossing point near the Gaza border. The released hostages have been identified as Matan Engerst, Guy Gilboa Dalal, Alon Ohel, Gali and Zivi Berman, Eitan Mor, and Omari Moran.

The hostages briefly reunited with their families at the border before being taken for medical examinations and debriefing. The ICRC facilitated and monitored the transfer in accordance with the terms outlined in the ceasefire agreement.

Israeli officials stated that this marks the first phase of a broader exchange arrangement that will see up to 20 hostages released in stages. In return, Israel is expected to free more than 1,700 Palestinian prisoners, including detainees from both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Crowds gathered in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square to celebrate the news, waving Israeli flags and chanting in support of the freed captives. Families and supporters expressed relief after weeks of uncertainty, while urging the government to continue efforts to secure the release of all remaining hostages.

Mediators from regional and international partners including Egypt, Qatar, and the United States played a key role in negotiating and implementing the agreement. Officials have emphasized that ongoing cooperation will be crucial to ensure the deal’s full execution and the maintenance of the fragile ceasefire.

Despite the breakthrough, analysts caution that numerous challenges remain. The verification of the status of all captives, the logistics of prisoner releases, and the durability of the truce will require sustained oversight.

The current ceasefire and exchange arrangement are being viewed as one of the most significant diplomatic steps in recent years of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Both sides have expressed cautious optimism, stressing that lasting peace will depend on adherence to the agreed terms and continued dialogue in the coming phases.
