EC Confirms Two Candidates Have Met Minimum Supporter Threshold

The Electoral Commission of Uganda has begun notifying presidential aspirants about the status of their supporter lists, a crucial step in the lead-up to the 2025 elections.

According to the Commission, as of Friday, 19th September 2025, 27 out of the 38 aspirants who submitted their lists have received updates.

Among those notified, only two candidates have met the required minimum number of supporters, while the others are at various stages of compliance. The Commission continues to verify the remaining aspirants’ submissions and will notify them once the process is complete.

Under Section 10 (3) of the Presidential Elections Act, every aspirant must attach a list of registered voters supporting their bid. Each supporter must provide their name, signature, physical address, and voter registration number as specified by law.

The law also requires that each presidential candidate be supported by at least one hundred voters in at least two-thirds of Uganda’s districts, amounting to a minimum of 9,800 supporters.

This strict requirement ensures that only candidates with broad-based support across the country can participate in the elections.

The Electoral Commission emphasizes that the verification process is thorough, aiming to uphold the legal requirements. Section 10 (4) prohibits any person from supporting more than one candidate, and those who do so face legal consequences.

According to Section 10 (5), anyone who violates this rule can be fined up to UGX 480,000, imprisoned for up to one year, or both. The Commission stresses that adherence to these rules is vital for a transparent and credible nomination process.

Julius Mucunguzi, the Commission’s spokesperson, reiterated the importance of compliance with electoral laws. He assured aspirants and the public that the Commission is committed to ensuring that the nomination exercise for presidential and other elective positions is conducted in full accordance with the law.

The notification of supporter lists is part of this commitment, allowing candidates to address any issues before the formal nomination dates.

Presidential nominations are scheduled for the 23rd and 24th of September 2025 at the Electoral Commission offices in Lweza-Lubowa, Makindye Ssaaabagaabo.

Aspirants are reminded to complete all requirements ahead of the nomination period to avoid disqualification. With the verification process underway, the country watches closely as the race to the State House begins to take shape.
