Kampala, Uganda – The Electoral Commission of Uganda (EC) has approved a range of election symbols for independent candidates ahead of the 2026 General Elections.
The symbols are designed to help voters easily identify candidates on the ballot and ensure a transparent and accessible voting process.
During the nomination process, independent candidates will select their symbols on a first-come, first-served basis.
The available options include familiar everyday items such as a ball, banana, boat, book, borehole, candle, car, chair, clock, coffee, cup, house, jerrycan, kettle, megaphone, pot, radio, saucepan, table, and television. Each symbol is unique and represents an individual candidate clearly and recognizably.
The Commission emphasized that these symbols are particularly important for voters who may have difficulty reading or remembering candidate names.
By associating each candidate with a clear and familiar symbol, the EC aims to make the electoral process inclusive and voter-friendly, ensuring that all citizens can exercise their democratic rights confidently.
Candidates are encouraged to choose a symbol that best represents their campaign values, message, or personal identity.
The approved system not only simplifies voting but also adds a visual element that enhances voter engagement and understanding.
As Uganda moves closer to the 2026 elections, the Electoral Commission calls on citizens to familiarize themselves with the approved symbols.
Awareness of these symbols will help voters make informed choices, reinforcing the integrity, transparency, and fairness of the democratic process.
