City tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia has been awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievers Award at the National Property Awards held last week at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala.
Organized by the Uganda Homeowners Association (UHA), the ceremony celebrated Sudhir’s transformative contributions to Uganda’s real estate sector and urban development, cementing his legacy as a pioneer in shaping the nation’s skyline.
Edwin Musiime, UHA leader, presented the award, lauding Sudhir’s multifaceted impact.
“Dr. Sudhir has dedicated his life to elevating the standards of living for Ugandans,” Musiime said.
“His investments in affordable housing, education, healthcare, and recreation have redefined urban development.” The event also highlighted the urgent need to address Uganda’s housing deficit, estimated at seven million units, with stakeholders calling for stronger public-private partnerships.

Ms Judith Nabakooba, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling the housing crisis.
“Collaboration between the private sector and government is crucial to delivering affordable homes,” she stated, urging innovative solutions to meet growing demand.
Mugabi Lazarus, Director at AREA Uganda, added that households should aim to spend no more than 30% of their income on housing, advocating for targeted government interventions to bridge the gap.
Sudhir’s journey began in the UK, where he amassed $25,000 before returning to Uganda in 1985. Initially a beer distributor, he pivoted to real estate, founding Meera Investments Ltd under the Ruparelia Group.
His portfolio, spanning hospitality, banking, education, and agriculture, includes iconic developments like Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kabira Country Club, Kingdom Kampala, the Pearl Business Tower, and the recently launched One-10 Apartments in Kololo.

These projects have not only elevated Kampala’s architectural landscape but also expanded access to quality housing and commercial spaces, driving economic growth.
The National Property Awards underscored Sudhir’s enduring influence on Uganda’s urban transformation. His vision continues to inspire innovative real estate solutions, positioning him as a cornerstone of the nation’s development.
As Uganda grapples with its housing challenges, Sudhir’s legacy serves as a blueprint for public-private collaboration, offering hope for a more accessible and vibrant urban future.
