EC Engages UPDF Political Commissars on Role in Free and Fair Elections

Kaweweta, Uganda – The Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda yesterday held a strategic meeting with the Political Commissars of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) at the Oliver Tambo School of Leadership in Kaweweta.

The session was designed to enhance understanding of the electoral process and clarify the role of military political leaders in supporting free and fair elections.

During the meeting, EC Chairperson Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon outlined the rights, duties, and responsibilities of UPDF commissars during elections.

He emphasized the importance of upholding the law, maintaining impartiality, and promoting democratic values within their units. The discussion also highlighted ways in which political commissars can educate both their colleagues and the wider public about the voting process.

The interactive session provided a platform for commissars to ask questions and seek clarity on specific aspects of the electoral process. Justice Byabakama urged them to be proactive in promoting transparency and accountability, noting that their influence can strengthen public confidence in Uganda’s elections.

By engaging directly with military leadership, the Electoral Commission aims to foster a well-informed UPDF that can guide citizens on their electoral rights. This initiative forms part of the Commission’s broader efforts to collaborate with all stakeholders to safeguard democracy in the country.

The Kaweweta meeting marks an important step in bridging the gap between military leadership and civilian electoral structures. Equipping UPDF Political Commissars with knowledge and guidance is intended to ensure that every election is conducted smoothly, fairly, and with the full participation of informed citizens.
