KAMPALA — At least three women are nursing life-threatening injuries following an explosion inside a sauna at Buziga Country Resort in Makindye Division on Sunday evening.
The Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed the incident, noting that the blast occurred at around 8:30 pm.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion followed by smoke and flames that engulfed the sauna section of the resort.
“One of the victims, Hajjati Mastula, 69, who also serves as the vice chairperson for Katuuso village, was the most affected and was found with severe burns on the chest and back,” Owoyesigyire told journalists during the weekly police briefing at Naguru. “Two other victims, including Zahara Nakaweesi, sustained burns all over the body as well as a broken leg, while Mamrum Aisha suffered extensive burns.”
The victims were rushed to Kiruddu Hospital for first aid before being transferred to Nsambya and Mulago Hospitals for further management. Police confirmed that no fatalities had been registered by press time.
Owoyesigyire added that the explosion caused extensive damage to the facility. Part of the sauna structure collapsed, while remaining walls developed cracks.
Debris and broken glass were scattered across the premises, pointing to the force of the blast.
Investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing. Authorities have since cordoned off the affected area to allow experts to assess the structural integrity of the building and establish the source of the blast.
Police urged the public to remain calm, assuring that a detailed report will be released once inquiries are complete.
