Kampala – Uganda Media Centre Executive Director, Mr Ofwono Opondo, has resigned from his position ahead of the 2026 General Elections, revealing his intentions to join elective politics.
Speaking during a media interaction on Monday, Mr Opondo confirmed he had officially handed over office and would now focus on his bid to represent older persons in Eastern Uganda in the next Parliament.
“I want to confirm that I have resigned from the Uganda Media Centre, and today, I handed over office,” Mr Opondo stated.
The veteran government spokesperson, known for his sharp commentary on national issues, said his decision was motivated by a desire to serve in a new capacity and amplify the voices of senior citizens, a demographic he says deserves more focused representation.
His resignation comes at a politically charged moment as the country edges closer to the 2026 polls, with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) already making strong claims about its support base.
President Yoweri Museveni, while addressing NRM members recently, claimed that the party enjoys the backing of 19 million supporters. He urged them to verify their names in the party’s register as part of early preparations for the elections.
However, opposition voices have poked holes in the figures. Kira Municipality Member of Parliament, Mr Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, dismissed the claim as political fiction, accusing the President’s inner circle of feeding him false data.
“The President is being lied to, just like he was misled ahead of the Kawempe North by-election, which the NRM lost badly,” Mr Ssemujju said.
As political activity intensifies, Mr Opondo’s next steps will be watched closely, given his long-standing ties with the government communication machinery and his new ambitions within the evolving political landscape.
