Min. Babalanda Champions Poverty Eradication with Solar Lamp Initiative in Buyende District

The Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, has urged evening market vendors to maximize their profits and secure their commodities as part of efforts to combat poverty in their communities. This call was made during the installation of solar lamps in Budiope West, Buyende District.

Speaking at a leaders’ meeting held yesterday at Ikanda Primary School in Ikanda Parish, Buyende Sub-county, Minister Babalanda expressed concern over the persistent power challenges in parts of Buyende District.

She highlighted how the lack of electricity in evening markets has led to insecurity, financial losses, and other challenges for vendors.

“Many of our people in Buyende District still lack access to electricity, and even in areas where power is available, it is often unreliable. Darkness in evening markets creates unsafe conditions, exposes vendors to counterfeit money, and leads to the loss of goods. These issues must be addressed,” she said.

The Minister assured local leaders that the donation of solar lamps would help mitigate these challenges. “Today, as we launch these solar lamps, every trading centre in Budiope West will receive them. This initiative aims to reduce insecurity, improve safety, and support the livelihoods of our people,” she stated.

Minister Babalanda also commended local leaders for embracing President Museveni’s wealth creation agenda and urged everyone to actively participate in government programs.

She reiterated her commitment to fighting poverty in Buyende District by focusing on key sectors such as education, transport, health, and access to clean water.

“I have embarked on a journey to fight poverty through various projects, and no one will be left behind. I urge everyone to adopt a positive mindset. We have already begun rehabilitating roads, drilling boreholes in every parish for clean water, and now we are providing solar lamps. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to improve the well-being of our people and eradicate poverty,” she explained.

The Minister also acknowledged President Museveni’s dedication to poverty eradication, saying, “My boss, H.E. Rtd. Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, is always on the ground teaching people how to fight poverty. How can I sit back and relax while he is working tirelessly? Recently, he visited Busoga to emphasize the importance of poverty eradication, and we must all follow his lead.”

In addition to the solar lamps, Minister Babalanda donated desks worth UGX1 million shillings to Ikanda Primary School, cement to local churches, and large saucepans and 100 plates per village to assist with social gatherings.

Local leaders expressed their gratitude to the Minister for her consistent support and commitment to addressing the needs of the community.

The meeting was attended by Buyende District RDC Major Betty, DRDC Mityana Prossy Mwanjuzi, ARDC Emmanuel Kabenge, several LC3 Chairpersons, LC2 Chairpersons, LC1 Chairpersons, and other officials.
