A 17-year-old student, identified as Ndagire Mary, has tragically died after setting herself on fire in protest against being placed in a single-sex school.

Ndagire, a Senior Three student, reportedly preferred attending a mixed-day school to maintain a relationship with her 21-year-old boyfriend. She succumbed to her injuries following the incident.

Her death has garnered significant attention, with many Ugandans expressing their condolences to her family and friends on social media.

The incident has also sparked discussions about the importance of parental guidance and counseling, with many suggesting that such tragedies could be prevented through open communication about future aspirations and relationships.

In other news, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has called upon Ugandans to vote for President Yoweri Museveni in the 2026 presidential elections, suggesting that this might be Museveni’s final term in office.
