Police in Kanungu District are on the hunt for a man accused of beheading his elderly father following a bitter dispute over land ownership.
The suspect, identified as Erias Nahabwe, allegedly killed his 75-year-old father, Bagambana Nyansio, on February 4, 2025, at their home in Kanjara Cell, Southern Ward, Kanungu Town Council.
According to police reports, the conflict started when Bagambana, who was unwell, asked his son for financial help to seek treatment at Katate Health Centre IV. When Nahabwe refused, his father insisted on selling a portion of his land to raise the money. The son allegedly declined to hand over the land documents, fueling a heated argument.
Later that morning, Bagambana left for the health facility alone while his wife went to a nearby bar. Upon returning home in the evening, she discovered her husband lying lifeless in bed—his head severed and a blood-stained machete abandoned nearby.
Alarmed by the gruesome scene, the area chairperson, Twesigye Koronerio, alerted the police, who swiftly launched investigations. A police K-9 unit tracked the suspect’s trail to his home, but Nahabwe had already disappeared. Authorities also reported that the family’s herdsman was missing under mysterious circumstances.
Bagambana’s body was transported to Katate Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination. Meanwhile, security forces have intensified the search for Nahabwe, urging the public to provide any information that may lead to his arrest.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate condemned the act and assured residents that law enforcement officers were determined to apprehend the suspect.
“This was a senseless and brutal act. We are actively pursuing the suspect and call upon the community to assist us in ensuring justice is served,” Maate stated.
Police continue to appeal for information that could help bring the fugitive to justice.
