NUP’s Bobi Wine Announces 2026 Presidential Bid

National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has announced his intention to run for Uganda’s presidency in the 2026 elections, pending endorsement by his party.

Speaking from his home in Magere, Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District, Kyagulanyi declared his readiness to challenge President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni or any candidate fielded by the ruling party.

“I am ready to challenge Museveni or any candidate his party decides to front,” Kyagulanyi stated during a press conference. He reaffirmed his commitment to the electoral process, emphasising his determination to represent his party and champion the voices of Ugandans seeking change.

Tackling Key Issues

Kyagulanyi addressed various national concerns during a question-and-answer session, including factionalism within NUP, opposition unity, political prisoners, and the 2026 electoral roadmap.

On Alleged Factions in NUP

“There are no factions in NUP—none at all. Some individuals claim to represent factions, but they are not part of us. Those pretending to be from NUP are being used by the regime to create a false narrative of division,” Kyagulanyi asserted.

He further clarified that individuals who have engaged in corruption or aligned themselves with the government no longer represent the party.

On Political Prisoners

Kyagulanyi criticised the government’s treatment of political prisoners and condemned the pressure on detainees to plead guilty to crimes they did not commit.

“I would never advise any prisoner to accept a crime they didn’t commit because it creates the illusion that their arrests were justified. However, we support all political prisoners in whatever decisions they make,” he said.

He also called for accountability for the 18 missing individuals whom the government has admitted to detaining, urging transparency and justice for their families.

On Opposition Unity and Reconciliation

Kyagulanyi expressed openness to forming an opposition coalition and reconciling with former NUP members under certain conditions.

“We are open to working with anyone committed to ending Museveni’s dictatorship and restoring democracy. For reconciliation within NUP, principles such as accountability and integrity must guide us,” he noted.

Criticism of Government Actions

Kyagulanyi also responded to comments by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who suggested shutting down meetings critical of senior government officials.

“It is troubling to hear such reckless and illegal statements. This reflects the lawlessness and impunity under Museveni’s regime,” he remarked, calling for accountability and adherence to the rule of law.

Vision for 2026 Elections

Kyagulanyi reaffirmed NUP’s readiness to engage in the 2026 elections, emphasizing unity, principles, and the pursuit of justice.

“Our focus is on building a better future for all Ugandans. We are committed to change and will continue to advocate for a free and democratic Uganda,” he concluded.

The Electoral Commission has released the 2026 election roadmap, setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested political season.
