The Alur Kingdom has urged the Ugandan government to prioritise infrastructure development in the Kingdom’s Albertine region, citing the need for improved oil roads and related facilities.
Speaking during a familiarisation tour of oil and gas operations in the Lake Albert Basin from December 6–8, Deputy Prime Minister Vincent Orach Ocaya emphasised the importance of integrating infrastructure projects to support the Kingdom’s socio-economic transformation. The tour was organised by the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC).
Alur Kingdom officials acknowledged as significant cultural stakeholders in the oil and gas sector, visited both the Tilenga and Kingfisher petroleum development areas. The Alur people are one of the largest ethnic groups residing in the Lake Albert Basin.
In a press release issued by the Kingdom’s Director of Communication, David Rupiny, Ocaya highlighted the positive strides made in Uganda’s oil and gas sector, describing it as a “potential game changer” for the country’s economic future.
“The readiness of oil production pads, crude oil storage facilities, and the promise of royalty payments once commercial revenues begin flowing are encouraging,” Ocaya remarked.
The tour aimed to update cultural leaders on the progress of oil and gas development projects and strengthen their role as stakeholders in the region’s economic growth.
Deputy Premier Ocaya led a delegation comprising five chiefs from Jonam in Pakwach District, two chiefs from Padyere in Nebbi District, and other Kingdom officials, including cabinet ministers.
Chiefs participating in the tour included Rwoth Jephta Oromcan Kerunega (Padwot Chiefdom), Rwoth Opar Angiya Justine (Pawong Chiefdom), and Rwoth Okwong Kasiano (Pangieth Chiefdom), among others.
The event highlighted the unity between the Alur and Jonam people, with representatives from both groups collaborating during the tour. This solidarity, the Kingdom noted, underscores the shared cultural heritage and the collective vision for regional development.
The Alur Kingdom reiterated its call for the government to invest in vital infrastructure projects that would not only enhance the oil sector but also improve the livelihoods of the people in the Albertine region.
