Arua Police are holding two suspects in connection with the theft of seven solar panels worth millions of shillings.
The solar systems, part of a water pumping project funded by the Red Cross, were installed in Ayaayia Parish, Ajia Sub-County, Arua District.
The suspects, identified as Manega Hassan, 33, a driver from Tanyanyika Cell in Arua City, and Adoroti Ronald, 30, a casual worker from Gallia Village, Yachi Parish, Madi Okollo District, were intercepted on the evening of 18 November 2024 by a security team comprising Field Force Unit officers and highway patrols.
The two were travelling in a green Toyota Hiace van (registration number UBE 661Y) with the stolen solar panels concealed in the vehicle.
According to West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson Collins Asea, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects dismantled the panels and were attempting to sell them.
“Six solar panels were recovered during a police operation in Erubu Town, but one is still missing,” Asea stated.
The theft has disrupted the water project’s operations, which serve a vital role in providing water to the local community.
Police have registered a case of vandalism and malicious damage to property. The vehicle used in the crime is in police custody, and relevant statements have been recorded as investigations continue.
The police have described the suspects as “habitual offenders targeting community infrastructure for personal gain” and confirmed efforts are underway to apprehend additional suspects believed to be part of the scheme.
In a related incident, unidentified thieves vandalised solar systems used to supply water to a rural community in Zeu Sub-County, Zombo District, last week.
The incident has left the community without a water supply, causing significant distress among residents.
Authorities are calling for heightened vigilance to safeguard community infrastructure and are urging anyone with information about the incidents to report to the nearest police station.
