Bubutu, Namisindwa District – Dr. Sarah Khanakwa, popularly known as Sibya Sipoto and an aspirant for the Namisindwa Woman MP seat, has called upon women in the district to unite and establish impactful savings groups to boost household incomes and empower communities.
Speaking to members of the Sibuse Women Saving Group on Saturday morning at Sibuse Primary School in Bubutu Sub-County, Dr. Khanakwa encouraged the women to strengthen their financial groups and nurture them into robust economic entities. She stressed the potential of these initiatives to foster community-driven development and financial independence.
“My vision is for the women of Namisindwa to emulate successful models like BRAC. This organisation started as women’s savings groups and grew into a globally recognised financial institution. I believe that if we unite and grow our groups, we can eventually establish our own banks,” Dr. Khanakwa said.
Highlighting the importance of government-led initiatives, she also emphasised the opportunities provided by the Parish Development Model.
“I encourage all women to join SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations) to benefit from the resources and support available for income-generating activities,” she added.
As a demonstration of her commitment to grassroots financial empowerment, Dr. Khanakwa joined the SACCO for women in Bubutu Sub-County. She pledged her active participation in the group’s activities, including savings, as a show of solidarity and support.
The meeting, attended by a significant number of women from Bubutu and neighbouring sub-counties, also featured discussions on practical strategies for improving the effectiveness of women’s savings groups.
Dr. Khanakwa pointed out that by leveraging collective financial power, the women could not only boost individual incomes but also uplift entire communities.
The attendees applauded her vision and pledged to work towards building sustainable financial models that could transform their households and the broader community.
Dr. Khanakwa’s appeal underscores her commitment to promoting women’s economic empowerment as a cornerstone of her broader agenda for Namisindwa District. Her initiative aligns with her ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for the district’s residents.
