A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier, Private Ameny Bonny, aged 32, has been sentenced to death by the 5th Infantry Division Field Court Martial for the murder of three residents in Paimol, Agago District.

Private Ameny was convicted on seven charges, including three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, one count of abduction, and one count of being absent without official leave (AWOL). The court, chaired by Colonel Peter Musherere, delivered the ruling after a two-day hearing held in Ngora East Village, Paimol Sub-county.

The case stemmed from an incident on 20 October 2024, when Private Ameny deserted his post at Pakondong Detach to search for his wife, Ogom Betty, whom he suspected of infidelity. Armed with a firearm, Ameny stormed Ngora East Village, where he shot and killed three people, injured two others, including a one-year-old child, and abducted Obita Richard at gunpoint to demand the whereabouts of his wife and her alleged lover.

During the trial, Ameny admitted to all charges, citing frustration over his wife’s disappearance with UGX 16.5 million, a loan he had given her to start a business.

Prosecutor Lt. Nekemiya Waiswa argued that the crimes were premeditated and committed by a soldier of sound mind, underscoring their devastating impact on the victims and community.

In his defence, Pte. Agaba Darius sought leniency, highlighting Ameny’s previously clean record, his role as the sole provider for his family, and his remorseful conduct during the proceedings.

Delivering the sentence, Colonel David Opeero, Deputy Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, praised the community for assisting in the investigation and emphasised the UPDF’s commitment to justice and accountability.

He reminded soldiers to address personal grievances through appropriate channels and avoid involving civilians in their disputes.

The sentence has sparked debate on the role of discipline within the military and the handling of domestic issues among armed forces personnel.
