Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Sam Omala, a once-prominent figure in Uganda’s law enforcement, is now bedridden at Mulago Hospital and has made a heartfelt plea for forgiveness from anyone he may have wronged during his life and career.
Omala’s son, Mutukuvu Devine Omala, disclosed that his father, currently unable to speak clearly, had asked him to convey the apology publicly.
According to Mutukuvu, the retired officer has been battling cancer for some time. Earlier this year, the family took him to Nairobi, Kenya, for treatment when his health began to decline.
“We took him to Nairobi when he could still walk and talk. Unfortunately, he collapsed while there, and the doctors said his blood pressure was dangerously low,” Mutukuvu said.
Despite stabilising his condition in Nairobi, Omala requested to return home. Upon his return to Uganda, his health deteriorated further, leading to his admission at Mulago Hospital, where he was bedridden for two weeks.
Doctors have since diagnosed him with kidney complications in addition to cancer.
Omala is best remembered for his role as Kampala North Police Operations Commander, where he led efforts to quell the 2011 “Walk-to-Work” protests spearheaded by opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye. Known for his stern approach, Omala was both respected and criticised for his methods during his tenure.
After retiring from the police force in 2020 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60, Omala lived a relatively quiet life. In 2023, he returned to public service as Deputy CEO of Operations at Arrow Security Systems Limited, a private security firm owned by Captain Mike Mukula.
In his message, Omala emphasised the importance of reconciliation. “He wants anyone he wronged to forgive him. It is his sincere wish,” said Mutukuvu.
As the retired officer continues to battle his illnesses, his family remains hopeful for his recovery and appreciative of the medical care he is receiving.
The family has requested prayers and support from the public during this challenging time.
