Arua, Uganda: Police in Arua City are investigating a case of aggravated defilement involving a 24-year-old man accused of sexually abusing his 12-year-old cousin.
The incident reportedly occurred on November 12, 2024, at Orivu Cell, Alivu Ward, Ayivu West Division, Arua City.
The West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, Collins Asea, revealed that the case was brought to police attention by the victim’s father, 70-year-old Azibu Relev, a resident of the same area.
“Mr. Azibu Relev reported the matter to Ayivu West Police Station. According to initial reports, the victim, a 12-year-old girl, was left at home with the suspect, her 24-year-old cousin, while the father was at work. The alleged incident occurred when the victim and the suspect shared a room,” said Asea.
Police investigations indicate that the suspect took advantage of being left alone at home with the young girl. The details of how the incident unfolded are part of the ongoing enquiries.
The suspect, whose name has been withheld to protect the victim’s identity, is currently in custody as police intensify their investigations.
Asea urged parents and guardians to be more vigilant, particularly as children return home for the holidays. He stressed the importance of ensuring children’s safety and preventing them from being left alone with individuals who may pose a risk.
“We appeal to parents and guardians to prioritise protecting their children, especially during the holiday season when children are often left unsupervised at home,” Asea stated.
