Soroti, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has inaugurated the Soroti Industrial Presidential Skilling Hub, marking another step in his administration’s drive to bolster vocational training and enhance youth employability across Uganda.
The state-of-the-art centre, located in the heart of Soroti District, currently enrols 240 students from across the Teso Subregion. It offers an inclusive admission policy, welcoming learners regardless of their academic qualifications. This initiative is designed to bridge the skills gap and prepare Ugandans for practical, employment-oriented opportunities.
President Museveni toured the hub’s facilities, observing various hands-on training activities in sectors such as welding and metal fabrication, industrial art and design, carpentry, hairdressing and cosmetology, and brick-laying.
The President commended the students’ efforts and expressed satisfaction with their dedication to acquiring valuable skills.
“This skilling hub is a critical step towards creating a self-reliant generation equipped to harness opportunities in Uganda’s industrial and service sectors,” Museveni remarked during his address.
The event drew a host of high-profile dignitaries, including Vice President Jesca Alupo and Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, as well as other local leaders and stakeholders. Their presence underscored the government’s collective commitment to advancing vocational education and addressing youth unemployment.
Following the launch, the President is scheduled to meet with local leaders and technical staff from all districts in the Teso Subregion at the Kumi Boma Grounds. The discussions will focus on strategies for wealth creation and sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on empowering rural communities through government programmes.
The Soroti Industrial Skilling Hub is part of a broader nationwide initiative to establish skilling centres in various regions. These hubs are designed to complement the government’s industrialisation agenda by equipping young people with the skills needed to thrive in Uganda’s evolving economy.
The programme also aligns with Uganda’s Vision 2040, which prioritises human capital development as a cornerstone for the nation’s socio-economic transformation. By targeting key areas such as industrialisation, infrastructure, and education, the government aims to foster a workforce that can drive the country towards middle-income status.
Residents in Soroti have welcomed the new hub, expressing optimism that it will create opportunities for youth to gain meaningful employment and contribute to the region’s economic growth.
