The Uganda Prisons Service is nearing completion of a state-of-the-art staff clinic at the Luzira Prison Complex, a development set to revolutionise healthcare for prison staff, inmates, and the surrounding communities.
The ultra-modern facility, designed to provide comprehensive healthcare services, will feature high-capacity wards, an intensive care unit, a maternity ward, a surgical theatre, laboratory and diagnostic services, and specialised departments for dentistry, mental health, and HIV/AIDS treatment.
Fred Akena, the Deputy Spokesperson for Uganda Prisons, highlighted the transformative impact of the facility.
“This clinic aims to revolutionise healthcare delivery for staff, inmates, and the surrounding communities of Luzira, Mutungo, Kitintale, Bugolobi, Mbuya, and Nakawa,” he said.
Equipped with advanced medical technology, including electronic medical records and telemedicine capabilities, the clinic is expected to enhance access to quality healthcare services significantly.

This innovation is anticipated to reduce referrals to external facilities, cutting costs and time, while also increasing the productivity of prison staff by ensuring they receive timely and efficient medical attention.
Beyond its immediate beneficiaries, the clinic will serve as a healthcare hub for nearby communities, easing the pressure on existing local health centres.
The government also hopes it will become a model for prison healthcare, showcasing how modern facilities can integrate with community health systems to achieve broader benefits.
The facility aligns with the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and access nationwide. Once operational, it is expected to set a benchmark for healthcare delivery in Uganda’s correctional institutions and beyond.
Final touches are being made to the clinic, with its official opening scheduled in the coming months. Residents of Luzira and surrounding areas eagerly await the improved medical services this facility promises to bring.
