Nebbi, Uganda – Police in Nebbi District are investigating a tragic shooting that resulted in the death of Oyomi Edmond, a local resident of Patong Village, Ayomu Parish, in Jupangira Sub-County.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of October 28, involved Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier Private (PTE) Lomer Samuel, who is currently in custody.
According to West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Asea Collins, around 2:35 AM, they received a distress call from a resident reporting a violent situation in the village.
In response, a joint team of police officers and UPDF personnel, including PTE Lomer, was dispatched to handle the disturbance.
He added that the security team encountered resistance from a crowd upon arrival, leading to an intense confrontation. During the altercation, PTE Lomer discharged his firearm, resulting in the fatal shooting of Oyomi Edmond.
Asea further noted that the District Police Commander (DPC), along with officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), quickly secured the area to collect evidence. The case has been registered under Goli SD REF 05/28/10/2024, and the UPDF soldier involved remains in custody as investigations continue.
The body of the deceased was transported to Nebbi Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which authorities say will be crucial in shedding light on the circumstances of the incident.
SP Asea added that the Uganda Police Force, in cooperation with the UPDF, has assured the public of a thorough and transparent investigation.
“We are committed to establishing the full facts surrounding this unfortunate incident, and updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” said SP Asea Collins.
