Kiteezi Landfill Landlords Urge Govt to Expedite Compensation

Landlords whose properties were damaged by the overflow from the Kiteezi landfill are urging the government to expedite compensation.

Two weeks ago, State Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Relief, and Refugees Lilian Aber assured affected residents that compensation would be provided after the valuation process was completed.

However, landlords are now pressing for faster valuations, as many families face hardships finding alternative accommodation.

One landlord, Jonathan Kasule, voiced concerns about the delay, suggesting that Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) should permit buffer zone residents to reoccupy their homes temporarily while awaiting compensation.

Another resident, Muhammad Kironde, expressed scepticism about receiving fair compensation relative to previous property values.

KCCA’s acting Executive Director, Frank Rusa Nyakaana, announced on Thursday that a committee from the government valuer’s office is now assessing the damage. Once complete, the findings will be presented to the cabinet to finalise compensation amounts.

Rose Nakabugo, Assistant Commissioner for Disaster Preparedness, confirmed that the government has documented all affected residents, including those in the buffer zone and the 81 properties directly impacted.
