Former Sembabule District Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mathias Kintu Musoke, has officially parted ways with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to join the newly formed opposition party, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
Musoke, who served as RDC from 2017 to 2020, left the position to contest for the Kalungu West Constituency parliamentary seat, but lost to former Defense Minister Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja in the NRM primaries.
Musoke announced his defection during the launch of the PFF regional membership registration drive in Masaka, a key step towards the party’s formal registration with the Electoral Commission.
He cited dissatisfaction with NRM’s internal processes, particularly the lack of fairness in party elections and the failure of senior leaders to address these issues.
Musoke expressed concern over the growing dishonesty and lack of transparency within the party, which, he warned, jeopardizes its future.
In his remarks, Musoke highlighted the NRM’s failure to uphold internal democracy, criticizing the leadership for not providing equal opportunities for all candidates within the party.
He explained that his move to the PFF, a party still in its formative stages, gives him the chance to contribute to its foundation and shape its core principles. Musoke believes this involvement will offer him more influence and accountability within the party structure.
The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) is gaining traction as an emerging political force, born out of divisions within the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Uganda’s main opposition party. The FDC has been marred by internal disputes, with accusations of NRM interference and manipulation, prompting some members to break away and form the PFF.
Florence Nabakooza, a PFF coordinator in Kalungu district, praised Musoke’s defection, calling it a significant boost for the party. She noted that Musoke’s experience and decision to leave NRM could inspire others to join the movement.
Nabakooza also mentioned that the party leadership would likely recommend Musoke take on a role in building membership and establishing party structures in the region once the PFF completes its registration.
Meanwhile, Ismail Kafeero, the NRM Chairperson for Kalungu East Constituency, expressed hope that Musoke’s concerns could be addressed through dialogue. Kafeero emphasized that the NRM remains committed to listening to its members and resolving disputes to strengthen party unity.
