Court Orders Specialized Treatment for Bunyoro King Solomon Iguru I

The Hoima High Court has ordered that King (Omukama) Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I of Bunyoro be taken for specialized medical treatment abroad, potentially in India or any hospital equipped with top-tier facilities.

This ruling came after a decade-long legal battle initiated by Prince Apolo Kisoro, the former Bunyoro Kingdom tourism minister and personal assistant to the monarch.

In his application, Kisoro emphasized the deteriorating health of the king, presenting evidence of prearranged medical appointments in New Delhi and claiming to have gathered sufficient funds to cover the monarch’s treatment and travel expenses.

Kisoro argued that King Iguru’s treatment would ensure he could return to his official duties.

Represented by lawyers Jotham Mugarura and Elias Tumwebaze, Kisoro pointed out that the monarch had been ailing for an extended period, stating that his action was in the king’s best interest.

Justice Jesse Byaruhanga, presiding over the case, ruled that the Omukama had the right to receive adequate healthcare, regardless of his current status, ensuring the decision favored the monarch’s well-being.

Following the ruling, Kisoro expressed his relief and satisfaction. “This case has dragged on for 10 years, but I am pleased with the outcome,” he said. A witness in the case, Yoasi Isingoma, noted that Kisoro sought legal intervention after realizing the delays in getting medical care for the king.

However, Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom’s Prime Minister Andrew Byakutaga criticized Kisoro, accusing him of being an imposter. Byakutaga further claimed that Kisoro had falsely declared himself the next king and tampered with the monarch’s will. “The king’s family and our legal team are addressing this issue,” Byakutaga stated.

Tensions have been brewing in Bunyoro’s royal circles since 2014 when King Iguru’s health began declining, leading to conflicts between the Byakutaga administration and key members of the Babiito royal clan.
