The Uganda Police have addressed the public regarding an incident in which a Chinese national allegedly crashed into a vehicle carrying the sons of Wafula Ogutu, the former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
According to Ogutu, one of his sons sustained severe injuries, including multiple fractures in his leg.
Ogutu initially accused the Chinese driver of being intoxicated at the time of the accident, which took place on September 1, 2024.
He also claimed that after the incident, the driver’s sister, along with several police officers, visited his residence to discuss a possible settlement. “We rejected their proposal, after which two senior police officers started making threats,” Ogutu stated.
However, police spokesperson for the traffic department, Michael Kananura, refuted some of Ogutu’s claims.
He confirmed the accident but stated that the Chinese driver, operating vehicle No. UBL 438S, was tested for alcohol consumption, and the results were negative. The driver was arrested and later released on bond.
Kananura further revealed that a lawyer, supposedly representing Ogutu, had approached the driver, demanding UGX 6.5 million to settle the matter.
However, the driver, suspicious of the request, informed the authorities, leading to police involvement. According to the police, Wafula Ogutu eventually received UGX 3.5 million but refused to acknowledge the payment formally, leaving the dispute unresolved.
“The matter is now under state review, with both vehicles still at the police station,” Kananura concluded, adding that the case file remains open for further legal advice.
The suspect is currently out on bond, while the case continues to be reviewed.
