Dembe Group of Companies Transport drivers have accused the company’s Transport Manager, Rajju, of physical abuse and harassment, claiming he regularly assaults and insults Ugandan drivers without consequence.
The drivers report that their complaints to management have fallen on deaf ears, leaving them frustrated and helpless.
In the most recent incident, driver Salongo Nkubi was allegedly punched in front of staff by Rajju, who is accused of frequently resorting to violence against the drivers.
“We are subjected to kicks, slaps, and insults,” said one of the drivers, who asked to remain anonymous. “It’s happened to almost all of us, but the company remains silent. Even recently, Ssalongo was badly assaulted but no action taken against Rajju”
Drivers have considered striking in protest but fear losing their jobs due to the scarcity of employment opportunities and pressure from Ugandan managers within the company.
Rajju, who runs his office like “a prison torture den,” is known for ranting and shouting at Ugandan employees over minor issues, including vehicle breakdowns—despite being blamed for poor vehicle maintenance.
When approached for comment, the company’s Human Resource Manager, only identified as Allen, declined to address the allegations, stating, “I cannot respond to that.”
The drivers are now calling on the government to intervene, citing the increasing mistreatment and lack of accountability for their foreign manager, who they claim has become untouchable.
As tensions mount, the drivers warn that if the situation is not resolved soon, the situation could escalate further.
