In a significant show of community spirit, residents of Namabya, Bukhaweka, and Bupoto sub-counties in Namisindwa District have come together to rehabilitate deteriorating community roads.

The initiative, led by Dr. Khanakwa Sarah (PhD), a hopeful candidate for Woman MP, aims to improve access to essential services and reduce accidents on these vital routes.

Residents, mobilized by Dr. Khanakwa, took it upon themselves to repair the roads after witnessing the frequent accidents, particularly involving boda boda riders, due to the poor road conditions.

Apolo Nasimali, a resident of Namabya, highlighted the difficulties the community faced in reaching health centres, schools, and markets.

“Access to these vital services has been a challenge in many parts of greater Namisindwa County,” Nasimali said. “We decided as a community to come together and voluntarily work on the roads to make life easier for everyone,” he said.

Dr. Khanakwa emphasized the struggles faced by women and schoolchildren, especially in the hilly regions of Greater Buwabwala, due to impassable roads.

She expressed her joy at the large turnout and promised to continue supporting road rehabilitation efforts, even with limited tools, as part of her civic responsibility.

“I’m deeply moved by the community’s response,” Dr. Khanakwa said. “I was told about a recent incident where a sick woman had to be carried on people’s shoulders to Bupoto Health Centre III because the roads were so bad that even a boda boda couldn’t pass,” she added.

Dr. Khanakwa also took the opportunity to thank President Yoweri Museveni for the UGX 1 billion road fund allocated to districts across the country.

She urged those in charge of the funds to ensure they are used effectively for their intended purpose, to further improve the quality of life in the region.
