As a campaign circulates in Katakwi District advocating for the sole candidature of the incumbent Woman Member of Parliament (WMP), a new contender, Cecillia Anyakoit, has entered the race, shaking up the political landscape ahead of the 2026 elections.
Anyakoit’s decision to vie for the seat has sparked reactions from various quarters, with some expressing strong opposition to the idea of a sole candidate.
“We reject the concept of sole candidature in Katakwi District. The people should have the freedom to choose their leaders democratically. Those pushing for these forms are driven by personal interests,” said Akareut Victor.
Anyakoit, who has transitioned from the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) to the National Resistance Movement (NRM), will be competing against the current Vice President, Hon. Jessica Alupo, in what is expected to be a heated contest for the Woman MP seat.
Known as an “iron lady” with a no-nonsense approach, Anyakoit has called on her supporters to remain calm and confident as she prepares to challenge the status quo.
She also urged those on opposing sides to put down their arms, signaling that the campaign would be vigorous but peaceful.
Meanwhile, The Standard have learnt thatVoters in Katakwi are increasingly vocal about their demands for better accountability, governance, and service delivery from their leaders. Anyakoit, positioning herself as an advocate for these issues, stated, “I am here to fight for the rights of the ‘wanainchi,’ regardless of their political affiliation.”

“Katakwi needs change for development, and together, we can achieve it. United we stand, divided we fall,” Anyakoit declared, urging the community to mobilize in support of her bid for the Woman MP seat.
