Eight people lost their lives, and 37 others were injured in a road accident on the Kampala-Mbarara highway.
The accident involved a Fuso lorry with registration number UBM 673K and a bus belonging to Gateway Bus Company Limited, with registration number UBQ 621K and occurred on Monday morning at Kirumba junction in Kyazanga town council, Lwengo district.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus heading to Kampala enroute from Kisoro district collided head-on with a Fuso lorry that was loaded with maize flour heading to Mbarara.
Josephine Kankindu, who resides next to the accident scene, indicates that six of the casualties died on the spot while others died as they were being rushed to hospitals.
Twaha Kasirye, the Greater Masaka Regional Police Commander blamed the accident on overspeeding by the bus driver who he says was rushing to meet his stage schedule in Kampala.
He says that the victims some of whom are in very critical condition have been rushed to various health facilities including; Lyantonde Hospital, Kyazanga Health Centre IV, and Masaka Regional Referral Hospital to get medical attention.
He adds that their team is yet to identify the dead, indicating that they are still waiting for the relatives to show up at the Masaka Regional Referral Hospital mortuary.
