Renowned comedian and activist Sammy Okanya, a member of the Da Mighty Family comedy group, was granted cash bail of Shs. 500,000 by the Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate yesterday.

Okanya, known for his controversial and politically charged humor, had been charged with being a common nuisance following his participation in the #March2Parliament protests in July.

The protests, which garnered widespread attention, called for government accountability and reforms.Following his arrest, Okanya was remanded to Luzira prison, where he had been awaiting his court appearance.

His legal team argued that the charges against him were an infringement on his right to freedom of expression, a sentiment echoed by his supporters.

Sammy Okanya had earlier been arraigned before court in absence of his lawyers having been sneaked into the court premises.

During his bail application hearing, the government prosecutor revealed that the investigations into his matters where complete.

He was told to present his sureties who included his mother, uncle, and brother on a non-cash bond of Shs 2m each.

The case hearing is set to commence on the 5th of September 2024 at the Buganda Road Court.

The comedian was also told to leave his National Identity card and Passport in court but given a life-line that whenever he has a valid reason of travel he could access them.

He now joins the several other #March2Parliament protestors who were granted bail and sent back home to enjoy their freedom.
