A 38-year-old inmate at Hoima Prison, identified as Stephen Mbabazi, died after collapsing at the facility.

Mbabazi, a resident of Bujumbura East in Hoima City, was on remand facing murder charges when the incident occurred on Thursday around 9 a.m.

According to reports, earlier in the week, Mbabazi experienced stomach complications and received treatment at the prison clinic, where his condition initially improved. However, on Thursday, his health worsened again.

Prison officials arranged to transfer him to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for further medical care, but he collapsed and died at the prison gate before the transfer could take place.

Julius Hakiza, the police spokesperson for the Albertine region, stated that they are awaiting the results of the postmortem examination to determine the cause of death.

This is not the first death to occur in Hoima Prison in recent months. In December, another inmate, Yuda Mugisa, who had been convicted on murder charges, died after falling ill and being taken to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.

Additionally, in June 2022, an inmate from Kyabasenge Prison in Kakumiro died while attempting to escape custody.
