New details have emerged about the murder of Simon Peter Otim, who was killed on Thursday night at Sebina Zone, Kaleerwe, Mulago III Parish, Kawempe Division.
Otim was shot around 8:30 p.m. by two men who entered his living room while he was with his wife, daughter, and a visitor.
The assailants shot Otim twice in the chest and then stabbed him multiple times as his wife, daughter, and visitor hid in the bedrooms, screaming for help. The attackers also attempted to break into the bedroom where his wife, Prossy Namutebi, was hiding but were unsuccessful.
Fresh information reveals that Otim was released in May after serving over ten years in prison for aggravated robbery. Allegedly, Otim, who had returned from Iraq where he worked as a security guard, bought a mobile phone that had been stolen from a person who was reportedly killed.
Consequently, Otim was arrested, prosecuted, found guilty, and sentenced to 20 years in prison for aggravated robbery. However, he was freed on a second appeal after serving half of his sentence.
“We were in the living room having a conversation when the intruders entered our home. One of them immediately cocked the gun and shot him in the chest. We all ran to the bedrooms, shouting for help. We heard him screaming for help,” Namutebi recounted.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, confirmed that Otim was an ex-convict who had been released just three months ago. Onyango said the motive behind Otim’s brutal murder is still unknown.
“We have launched an investigation into the incident. Statements have been recorded from several witnesses. The case is being handled by detectives at Wandegeya police station. We recovered a live bullet and a cartridge,” Onyango stated.
William Kazibwe, a chapatti seller, reported hearing screams for help following the sound of a gunshot. Kazibwe added that the attackers fled on a motorcycle. “I arrived and found people too scared to enter the house. I went in and found him in a pool of blood. We rushed him to Mulago hospital, hoping he was still alive, but the doctors declared him dead,” Kazibwe said.
Ismail Nsanja, the Vice Chairman of Sebina Zone, mentioned that Otim’s attackers initially attempted to escape via the Bwaise route but changed course, possibly to avoid CCTV cameras, and headed towards the Makerere Kavule route.
