Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon.Thomas Tayebwa has directed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeje Odongo, to address allegations that Uganda’s consulate in Dubai, UAE, is being used as a casino.
The issue arose following media reports and was brought to Parliament’s attention by Muwada Nkunyingi, the Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister and MP for Kyadondo County East, during a session on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
Nkunyingi urged for an investigation, emphasizing the potential international ramifications if the claims are true. He highlighted that turning the consulate into a casino would violate UAE laws, Uganda’s laws, and international diplomatic regulations.
“Parliament established this consulate to support and serve the thousands of Ugandans living in Dubai. Using it as a casino contradicts the laws of the UAE, our laws, and international laws governing diplomatic premises,” Nkunyingi stated.
He stressed the need for the consulate to be managed according to legal standards and called for information on any disciplinary, diplomatic, and administrative measures taken regarding the allegations.
Nkunyingi addressed his concerns to Prime Minister Robinah Nabanjja, who responded that the issue should be handled by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
“The Minister mentioned here is also an MP. Now that you have requested a statement, I will ensure he comes here to address the matter,” Nabanjja assured.
Deputy Speaker Tayebwa confirmed that the Minister of Foreign Affairs is scheduled to provide a statement on the issue on Tuesday.
