The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has remanded Dai Jie, a Chinese national, on charges of murder.

Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi remanded Dai on Thursday without reading the charges due to a language barrier.

Dai Jie appeared in court accompanied by a police officer. He relied on his phone to browse and translate English words spoken during the proceedings. He informed the court that his lawyer, identified only as Charles, was not present.

State Attorney Ivan Kyazze called a Chinese translator to determine the specific language Dai Jie understands, which was then recorded by the court.

Chief Magistrate Kayizzi ordered Dai Jie to be remanded to Murchison Bay Prison until August 14th, 2024, to allow time to find an interpreter.

Prosecution alleges that on July 7th, 2024, at Haidah Plaza on Ben Kiwanuka Street in Kampala District, Dai Jie, with malice aforethought, caused the death of Yang Wen Li. Police indicated that efforts to recover the weapon and the remains of the deceased are ongoing.
