The number of young people remanded to Luzira prison has climbed to 95 following the recent anti-corruption protests.
On Wednesday, City Hall and Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s courts ordered the remand of 40 more individuals, adding to the initial 54 charged and remanded on Tuesday.
Earlier this week, youths took to the streets, holding placards demanding the resignation of Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among over alleged corruption. While some protested against the overall corruption in the country, the majority of placards targeted Speaker Among specifically.
On Tuesday evening, various courts charged and remanded 54 protestors to Luzira, while others remained in police custody. On Wednesday, Grade One Magistrate Caroline Kyoshabire charged 15 youths with common nuisance, remanding them on four separate case files.
Additionally, Kampala Capital City Hall Court remanded another 25 protestors on similar charges. Buganda Road court followed suit, remanding 15 more individuals, including Jeremiah Kato (electrician), Ashiraf Kanunu (KIU student), David Anderson Onyango (carpenter), Eddy Kiyaga (driver), AbdulRahman Kabanda (intern doctor), Shabir Abdu Majid (timber dealer), Innocent Mutibwa (student), Vian Muwonge (unemployed), and Abdul Bast Najib (bakery attendant).
Others remanded include Hussein Lubaga (clearing agent), Samuel Okuja, Robert Maseruka (former Makerere University guild president), Brian Magala (businessman), Sadat Mugweri (boda boda rider), Joseph Owino (vendor), and Eric Muhwezi (loader at Energy Center).
The state has charged the suspects with common nuisance and being idle and disorderly. The prosecution alleges that on July 23, at the Parliament in Kampala Central, the suspects caused public obstruction by being rowdy and blocking walkways.
All accused individuals denied the charges, except one who was advised to change his plea in the next session if desired. They have been remanded until July 29, pending the allocation of their case files to different magistrates.
