Ugandan security agencies have significantly increased their presence in Kampala in anticipation of an anti-corruption protest, a police spokesperson confirmed on Monday.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, informed Xinhua via telephone that security personnel from various agencies had already been deployed across the city as a preventative measure.
“Security officers are already in place. They will maintain their presence today, tomorrow, and throughout the week,” Owoyesigyire stated.
He explained that numerous groups had been actively mobilizing on social media, encouraging participation in the Tuesday march. However, police have decided to halt the protest, citing concerns over potential criminal activities.
“There are individuals with intentions to disrupt public peace,” Owoyesigyire added, noting that sector commanders had been instructed to ensure security in their respective areas.
The police warned that mass gatherings on the streets could lead to “significant traffic congestion, trade disruptions, and disturbances to public order.”
Commanders have been directed to “use intelligence, remain firm and professional,” and to be vigilant in preventing property damage and protecting human lives.
President Yoweri Museveni, in a live televised address on Saturday, accused the opposition of collaborating with foreign entities to incite chaos through riots, illegal demonstrations, and disruptive processions.
“These individuals are unfair and inconsiderate, and they should be cautious, or we will have no choice but to address the situation,” Museveni warned.
The President’s remarks and the heightened security measures underscore the government’s determination to prevent any disorder stemming from the planned protest.
