Dr. Sarah Khanakwa, PhD, the head of Resource Mobilization at the Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) and aspiring Woman MP for Namisindwa District, has called on Ugandans to prioritize preventive health measures over curative ones.

Her remarks came during an integrated medical camp in Magale Town Council on Saturday, where thousands of residents received free medical treatment.

Dr. Khanakwa, who organized the medical camps to enhance public health in Namisindwa, stressed the importance of regular health check-ups for early detection and treatment of both non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and other health conditions.

“Prevention is better than cure. Regular health check-ups can help identify potential health issues early, allowing for timely intervention and treatment. This not only saves lives but also reduces the burden on our healthcare system,” she said.

She highlighted the significant impact of NCDs globally, which account for 41 million deaths annually—representing 74% of all global deaths. This figure rises to 86% of premature deaths in low- and middle-income countries. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of NCD deaths (17.9 million annually), followed by chronic respiratory diseases (4.1 million), diabetes (2.0 million), and kidney diseases.

David Masafu, a resident of Bumityero sub-county who attended the health camp, lauded Dr Khanakwa’s initiative and urged other leaders to emulate her patriotism.

“The health of the populace is a nation’s most valuable asset. If people aren’t well, the economy suffers, relationships suffer, and our national security is at greater risk,” Masafu said. He underscored the need for leaders to consider the health impacts of their decisions and policies, praising Dr. Khanakwa for her dedication to improving public health.

“We cannot solve our problems like poverty if we aren’t healthy. To build a culture of good health, our nation needs leaders like Dr. Khanakwa who are eager to drive change by working across disciplines and fostering collaboration. I hope the people of Namisindwa recognize this and make the right decision in 2026,” Masafu added.

Dr. Khanakwa’s health camps commenced on July 8th and 9th in Bukhaweka Town Council, followed by sessions in Bunambale on July 11th and 12th, Nabitsiki on July 14th and 15th, Bumbo on July 17th and 18th, and concluded in Magale Town Council on July 19th and 20th.

She announced that more health services are planned for the residents of Namisindwa.
